Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal has vowed not to allow what he described as “anti-national and anti-Punjab forces” to disturb peace and communal harmony in Punjab, in his first reaction after sustaining a serious injury in an attack at a gurdwara in Nanded.
Badal said his father and former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had never compromised with forces that threatened communal harmony and had consistently worked to maintain peace among different religious communities.
“My father S Parkash Singh Badal never compromised against these forces, who were prevalent earlier also. As chief minister Sardar Badal always maintained communal harmony between all religious communities in Punjab. Respect for all religions was the cornerstone of our State policy,” he said.
Referring to an earlier attack against him around one-and-a-half years ago on the premises of the Sri Darbar Sahib complex in Amritsar, Sukhbir Badal said he had once again been targeted at a sacred site associated with Guru Gobind Singh.
He asserted that such incidents would not intimidate him or force him to compromise on his principles.
“We can give any sacrifice for the sake of religious harmony and progress of the country and Punjab. This is and will remain our top most priority,” Badal said.
Expressing gratitude to Guru Gobind Singh for protecting him, the SAD president said he believed the Guru had come to his aid despite the alleged attempt by forces opposed to peace to harm him.
Meanwhile, Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for personally calling to enquire about Sukhbir Badal’s health.
She also expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for taking immediate cognisance of the incident and directing central investigating agencies to coordinate with the Maharashtra Police in the probe.
Harsimrat Badal also thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah for reaching out to her during the “difficult period” and assuring an effective investigation into the incident.
