The Shiromani Akali Dal Punar Surjit on Thursday strongly condemned the attack on Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal at Takht Sri Hazur Sahib, describing an assault on anyone visiting a gurdwara to pay respects as highly condemnable.
In a joint statement, party Secretary General Gurpartap Singh Wadala, Senior Vice President Sucha Singh Chhotepur, Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Prof. Prem Singh Chandumajra and Youth Akali Dal president Gurjit Singh Talwandi said Badal was injured in the attack at Sri Hazur Sahib.
The leaders said gurdwaras are shared religious places of worship for the Sikh community, where devotees pray not only for themselves but also for Sarbat Da Bhala — the welfare of all.
They described a life-threatening attack on a devotee visiting such a sacred place as extremely unfortunate and condemned the incident in strong terms.
The leaders also raised questions over the security arrangements, expressing concern over how an attacker was able to approach a leader under Z-category security with such ease.
They said the circumstances surrounding the security breach should be thoroughly investigated and the reasons behind the lapse established.
The party leaders prayed for the speedy recovery and good health of Sukhbir Singh Badal.
The statement was issued to the media by party Media In-charge Tajinder Singh Pannu.
