Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday enquired about the well-being of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal after he was injured in an alleged attack at a gurdwara in Nanded, Maharashtra, earlier in the day.
According to sources, Modi spoke over the phone with Badal’s wife and Member of Parliament Harsimrat Kaur Badal to enquire about his condition.
The incident took place around 11 a.m. when Badal was visiting Mata Sahib Gurdwara in the Hazur Sahib area on the outskirts of Nanded. Sources said a Nihang carrying a kirpan attempted to attack the SAD chief. The assailant was subsequently taken into custody by the police.
SAD chief spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Kler said Badal had gone to Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib to pay obeisance and was attacked while leaving the gurdwara. According to Kler, Badal’s security personnel intervened and prevented the attack, but his right arm was injured in the incident. He was subsequently provided medical treatment.
Kler said Badal was in good health and condemned what he described as repeated attempts by “anti-Sikh forces” to target the SAD president. He said the Maharashtra Police should investigate the incident thoroughly and identify anyone involved in an alleged conspiracy.
SAD vice president and Punjab Core Committee member Sanjeev Talwar described the incident as “a direct attack on Sikhism” and expressed concern that it could be linked to attempts to create divisions in Punjab.
The attack has also drawn condemnation from the BJP. BJP MP Tarun Chugh termed the incident strongly condemnable and said violence had no place at a sacred Sikh religious site.
Chugh said political differences should be addressed through dialogue and discussion rather than violence, and called for strict action against those found responsible.
The incident also recalls an attack attempt on Badal in December 2024 while he was serving religious penance at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
