Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has strongly condemned the attack on Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal at Gurdwara Mata Sahib Deva Ji near Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded.
Badal was visiting the gurdwara with his family when he was allegedly attacked by an individual. Dhami described the incident as deeply unfortunate and said an attack on the head of a representative Sikh political organisation at a sacred Sikh shrine was distressing and unacceptable.
Dhami said Badal had gone to the gurdwara with his family to pay obeisance and that such an attack reflected an alleged anti-Panth mentality while also undermining the sanctity and decorum of the Guru Ghar.
He said devotees visit gurdwaras with faith and reverence and that an attack on any devotee causes direct hurt to Sikh sentiments.
The SGPC president alleged that forces opposed to the Sikh Panth were attempting to weaken the community by creating divisions among Sikhs. He said such incidents appeared to be part of efforts aimed at creating conflict within the community.
Dhami stressed that the sanctity and religious decorum of gurdwaras were of the highest importance to the Sikh community and that such incidents could not be accepted at sacred places.
He called for an impartial investigation into the Nanded incident and demanded that those responsible, along with any forces found to be operating behind the attack, be identified and exposed.
