BJP leader and former Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu on Wednesday welcomed Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria’s positive report to the Union Home Ministry on the parole application of Jagtar Singh Hawara on humanitarian grounds.
Bittu, the grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, said he had met Governor Kataria and thanked him for taking a compassionate view of the matter, particularly in view of Hawara’s elderly and ailing mother.
“For the sake of an elderly and unwell mother, Hawara should be granted parole,” Bittu said.
He said the family of the late Beant Singh supported the humanitarian approach and maintained that an elderly mother should not be made to suffer for the actions of her son.
“As the family of late Beant Singh-ji, we second this humanitarian move. A mother should not be made to undergo a humanitarian punishment for the actions of her son. Whatever the legal consequences of his actions may be, an aged and unwell mother should not be deprived of the opportunity to meet her son when the law provides for temporary parole,” he said.
Bittu expressed hope that the competent authorities would consider the plea expeditiously and take an appropriate decision in accordance with the law.
He reiterated that while his family would always honour the “supreme sacrifice” of Beant Singh, it also believed that compassion, humanity and peace should guide society.
Earlier on Wednesday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann met Governor Kataria and sought his intervention for granting Hawara 10 days’ parole on humanitarian grounds. Mann said Hawara’s ailing mother, after 31 years, had renewed hope of meeting her son.
The Chief Minister said the Governor’s recommendation was required as the matter was being heard in Delhi. He also assured that the Punjab government would take full responsibility for maintaining law and order if parole was granted.
“Jagtar Singh Hawara has been lodged in Burail Jail in Chandigarh for the last 31 years. His mother is old and suffering from age-related health issues and is currently semi-conscious,” Mann said.
“In view of her deteriorating health condition, I have requested the Governor to kindly consider granting 10 days’ parole to Jagtar Singh Hawara at the earliest so that he can meet his mother,” he added.
Hawara is serving a sentence in connection with the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh in 1995.
