Youth president of the Shiromani Akali Dal Reorganised, Gurjit Singh Talwandi, visited Damdami Taksal at Chowk Mehta and met its chief, Sant Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale, seeking his blessings for his political and community work.
During the meeting, Talwandi was honoured with a siropa. He said the blessings of Sant Baba Harnam Singh would give him strength to serve the Panth and Punjab with greater commitment.
The two leaders also held a lengthy closed-door discussion on issues concerning the Sikh Panth and Punjab. Details of the discussions were not made public. However, the meeting has attracted attention in Panthic and Akali political circles amid discussions over possible future political alignments.
The statement issued by Talwandi’s office highlighted the longstanding association between the Talwandi family and Damdami Taksal. It said the relationship had remained strong through different difficult and challenging periods.
According to the statement, Jathedar Jagdev Singh Talwandi had received the blessings of the then Damdami Taksal chief Giani Gurbachan Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale to carry forward the Panthic legacy of his father, Jathedar Chhanga Singh. It described Chhanga Singh as a prominent Akali leader associated with the Panthic and freedom movements.
The statement also recalled the relationship between Jathedar Jagdev Singh Talwandi and Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale. While Bhindranwale had publicly criticised the Shiromani Akali Dal’s leadership and policies on several issues, he was said to have maintained personal respect and affection for Talwandi. The two were also seen together on several occasions during various Panthic issues and movements.
It further claimed that former Shiromani Akali Dal president Jathedar Jagdev Singh Talwandi joined the Dharam Yudh Morcha at the urging of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, despite running a separate agitation in Delhi at the time.
Against this historical backdrop, the statement described Gurjit Singh Talwandi’s meeting with the Damdami Taksal chief as significant and said it had triggered discussions about new possibilities and future political equations in Panthic politics.
The information was shared with the media by Talwandi’s media in-charge, Tejinder Singh Pannu.
