Shiromani Akali Dal Punar-Surjit will participate in large numbers in the August 15 programme announced by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha to gherao the Governor in support of the release of Bandi Singhs, party leader Giani Harpreet Singh said on Monday.
The announcement came as the Shiromani Akali Dal Punar-Surjit observed the first anniversary of its re-establishment as an Ardas Diwas. Party leaders and office-bearers, led by Giani Harpreet Singh, offered Ardas at Sri Akal Takht Sahib for the Chardi Kala of the Panth, Punjab and the party. They also prayed before Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, revered as Bandichhor Sahib, for the release of imprisoned Sikh prisoners.
Giani Harpreet Singh said the Shiromani Akali Dal, established in 1920 as the Panth’s regional political party, was re-established on August 11, 2025, in accordance with the directions of Sri Akal Takht Sahib. He said the reconstituted party was functioning under the guidance of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and in accordance with Panthic sentiments.
He said the anniversary Ardas specifically sought the release of Bandi Singhs, several of whom, according to the party, continue to remain incarcerated despite having completed sentences exceeding the prescribed terms for their offences.
Referring to specific cases, Giani Harpreet Singh said Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana had spent 31 years in prison and had remained in a death-row cell since being awarded the death sentence in 2007. He also said Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara’s mother was at an advanced stage of her life, but Hawara had not been granted parole to meet her.
“When governments have stopped listening to their demands, we have turned to Bandichhor Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji through Ardas,” he said, seeking the release of the imprisoned Singhs so that they could once again move freely among the Panth.
Giani Harpreet Singh also appealed to party workers and leaders to intensify efforts to strengthen the organisation and maintain the Shiromani Akali Dal’s position as a popular Panthic regional party.
At a subsequent meeting of office-bearers at the party office, the party decided to organise a large-scale programme at Longowal on August 20 to mark the death anniversary of Sant Harchand Singh Longowal. Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Gobind Singh Longowal and other Sangrur district leaders are holding meetings to coordinate preparations and have called upon party workers to ensure the programme’s success.
