Two alleged extortionists and associates of a gangster were arrested after a brief exchange of fire with police near Fatehgarh Sabra village in the Mallanwala area on Saturday evening, police said.
Ferozepur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bhupinder Singh identified the accused as Harjeet Singh, son of Jatinder Singh of Talwandi Soba in the Patti Sadar area, and Dilbagh Singh, son of Rashpal Singh of Jogewala village.
According to the SSP, teams from the Criminal Investigation Agency (CIA) and Mallanwala police received information about the movement of the two suspects and set up a joint naka near Fatehgarh Sabra.
When the accused, who were travelling on a motorcycle, were signalled to stop, they allegedly opened fire at the police team and attempted to escape. One of the bullets struck a police vehicle, according to the police.
The police retaliated, injuring both accused in their legs. They were subsequently taken to the Civil Hospital for treatment.
Two pistols were also recovered from the spot, police said.
The SSP said both accused have criminal backgrounds and are suspected to be involved in extortion-related activities. Further investigation is underway to establish their links with the gangster and determine their involvement in other criminal cases.
Police are also examining the recovered weapons and other evidence as part of the investigation.
