Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh Raises Gurdwara Mata Sundari Relocation Issue in Punjab Assembly

Chandigarh, August 3, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh on Monday raised the long-pending issue of relocation of Gurdwara Mata Sundari, situated on Airport Road, in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha and sought implementation of the earlier agreement reached with the shrine management.

The matter was raised during Question Hour on the opening day of the Monsoon Session of the Punjab Assembly. Kulwant Singh sought a response from Housing and Urban Development and Revenue Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian regarding the government’s position on the relocation proposal and the rehabilitation package agreed upon with the management of the gurdwara, which is run by Budha Dal Samparday under the leadership of Baba Balbir Singh.

The MLA said the gurdwara is located in the middle of Airport Road, an important route connecting Mohali with Chandigarh International Airport. He pointed out that during the construction of the road around 14 years ago, a diversion had to be created around the shrine, resulting in sharp turns on the busy stretch.

Kulwant Singh said the road alignment has become a serious safety concern, with frequent accidents reported over the years. He stated that hundreds of people have been injured and around 50 to 60 lives have reportedly been lost on the stretch since it became operational.

He informed the House that the government had earlier reached an agreement with the gurdwara management under which three acres of alternative land was to be provided for construction of a new shrine, along with financial assistance of Rs 2.93 crore for rebuilding the structure.

The MLA said this was the second such agreement reached with the management, showing the willingness of both sides to resolve the issue.

However, he expressed concern over the recent notice issued to the management regarding cancellation of the land allotment and the proposal for fresh discussions. Kulwant Singh requested the government to honour its previous commitment and complete the relocation process at the earliest to address the road safety concerns.

Responding to the issue, Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian assured the Assembly that the matter would be resolved. He said the government would work towards a mutually acceptable solution while keeping public interest and the sentiments of the gurdwara management in consideration.
