The Sher-e-Punjab T20 League was officially launched at the PCA International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on Sunday, with the tournament aiming to create a strong platform for young cricketers from Punjab to showcase their talent and progress towards higher levels of the game.
The inaugural edition of the league will be played from August 30 to September 13 and will feature some of Punjab’s biggest cricketing names, including India captain Shubman Gill, Arshdeep Singh, Abhishek Sharma, Gurnoor Brar, Prabhsimran Singh and Ramandeep Singh.
The league was launched by Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Secretary Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer and PCA President Amarjeet Singh Mehta in the presence of Gill and Arshdeep Singh. The official logo of the tournament was also unveiled during the ceremony.
Six teams will compete in 27 matches for the title in a round-robin format. Each franchise will have one marquee player and at least two icon players, bringing together experienced cricketers, domestic performers and emerging talent from across Punjab.
Shubman Gill said the league would provide young players with an important opportunity to display their skills and move closer to representing Punjab and India. He added that Punjab has always produced outstanding cricketers and expressed hope that the tournament would help discover more talented players.
Meet Hayer said Punjab has a rich cricketing tradition, producing legends such as Lala Amarnath and Yuvraj Singh, along with current stars like Gill, Arshdeep Singh, Prabhsimran Singh and Harmanpreet Kaur. He said the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League was a visionary initiative of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann aimed at strengthening the state’s cricketing ecosystem.
“This league will provide young cricketers with a platform to showcase their talent alongside international stars and take the next step in their careers,” Meet Hayer said.
PCA President Amarjeet Mehta said the tournament would allow aspiring players to share the dressing room with leading cricketers and gain valuable experience. He expressed confidence that the league would play an important role in shaping the future of Punjab cricket.
