Amritsar, March 20, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
In a significant development in the Varinder Ghuman death case, an FIR has been registered against four doctors associated with Fortis Hospital, Amritsar, following allegations of medical negligence during a surgical procedure.
Varinder Ghuman, a 41-year-old renowned vegetarian bodybuilder and actor, tragically passed away on October 9, 2025, while undergoing shoulder surgery at the hospital. Notably, Ghuman was reportedly in stable condition and had walked into the operation theatre himself prior to the procedure.
Allegations of Medical Negligence
The family of the late bodybuilder has consistently alleged that his death was the result of negligence on the part of the attending medical team. They have demanded accountability, claiming that proper medical protocols were not followed during the surgery.
Initially, hospital authorities maintained that Ghuman suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while in the operation theatre. However, these claims were challenged by the family, leading to a deeper investigation.
SIT Report and FIR Details
The case gained momentum after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) conducted a thorough probe. Based on its findings, an FIR has now been registered against four doctors:
-
Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Tapish Shukla
-
Consultant Anesthetist Dr. Alka Tiwari
-
Head of Anesthesia and Cardiology Consultant Dr. Rajinder Kaur
-
Dr. Arun Kumar Chopra
All four have been booked under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Medical Board Findings
A seven-member medical board was constituted to independently assess the allegations. The board’s report, released earlier in 2026, reportedly highlighted lapses in adhering to standard medical protocols during the procedure.
Hospital’s Response
Fortis Hospital had earlier stated that the surgery was completed successfully and that Ghuman suffered a sudden arrhythmia post-operation. The hospital has maintained that all necessary precautions were taken.
Public Reaction and Legacy
The untimely demise of Varinder Ghuman, who was widely admired for being a vegetarian bodybuilder and a former Mr. India (2009), sparked widespread public outrage. Known for his appearances in Punjabi cinema and his role in Tiger 3, Ghuman had a strong fan following.
The case continues to draw attention, with supporters and family members calling for justice and stricter accountability in healthcare practices.
