Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Sunday announced the appointment of Kanchanpreet Kaur as the Halqa Incharge for the Tarn Taran Assembly constituency, assigning her the responsibility of strengthening the party’s organisational structure at the grassroots level in the constituency.
The announcement was made by Sukhbir Singh Badal through a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Sukhbir Badal’s Announcement
In his post, the SAD president praised Kanchanpreet Kaur’s dedication and political commitment, highlighting her role during the recent Tarn Taran by-election campaign.
“Pleased to announce the appointment of Kanchanpreet Kaur as Halka Incharge for Tarn Taran Assembly constituency. A young, energetic and daring member of Shiromani Akali Dal, she vociferously campaigned for her mother, Principal Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, despite intense government pressure during the recent Tarn Taran by-election.
Her unwavering dedication and courage will further strengthen the party at the grassroots level in the constituency. Wishing her success and strength in the new role—may she continue to lead with the same fearless spirit.”
Political Background
Kanchanpreet Kaur is the daughter-in-law of Principal Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, who contested the Tarn Taran Assembly by-election on a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket, though she could not secure victory.
During the by-election campaign, Kanchanpreet Kaur emerged as a prominent face of the party’s campaign in the constituency and actively mobilised party workers and supporters.
Controversy During By-Election Campaign
Kanchanpreet Kaur also drew public attention during the by-election period when she was arrested by the Punjab Police after reaching the Majitha police station in Amritsar to join an investigation in a case registered against her.
Her arrest triggered political reactions at the time. She was subsequently released from police custody following a prolonged overnight hearing by a local court in Tarn Taran, which reportedly termed her arrest “unconstitutional.”
Her release came after the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed authorities to immediately examine the legality of her detention.
Role as Halqa Incharge
With her appointment as Halqa Incharge, Kanchanpreet Kaur will now oversee the party’s organisational activities in the Tarn Taran Assembly segment, including coordination with local leaders, strengthening booth-level structures and mobilising party workers ahead of future political contests.
The move is seen as part of the Shiromani Akali Dal’s efforts to energise its cadre and strengthen its presence in key constituencies across Punjab.
