Member of Parliament from Amritsar, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, has written a letter to Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, requesting that the supply of commercial LPG cylinders in Amritsar and Punjab be continued. Opposition MPs also held a protest outside the Lok Sabha today regarding the issue.
In his letter, MP Aujla said that the recent restrictions on the supply of commercial LPG cylinders across the country have created serious difficulties for hotels, restaurants and businesses associated with the tourism sector in Amritsar.
He stated that Amritsar is one of India’s major religious and tourist destinations, where lakhs of devotees and tourists visit every day to pay homage at sacred and historic sites such as Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), Jallianwala Bagh, Wagah Border, Ram Tirath Temple and Durgiana Temple. Therefore, the city’s economy largely depends on tourism.
Aujla wrote in the letter that Amritsar is a border district where industrial development is limited, and a large number of people earn their livelihood through hotels, dhabas, langars, motels and catering businesses. If the supply of commercial LPG is reduced or stopped, it will not only affect these businesses but will also cause major inconvenience to the pilgrims and tourists visiting the city.
The MP appealed to the Union Minister to consider granting special exemption or priority in commercial LPG supply for Amritsar, keeping in view its religious and tourism significance, so that the tourism industry and the livelihoods of local people are not affected.
He added that the intervention of the central government can help prevent inconvenience to the lakhs of pilgrims and tourists who visit the city.
