CT University Row: Omar Abdullah Orders Probe, Iltija Mufti Seeks Punjab Govt’s Intervention

Controversy Erupts Over Ramadan Meal Arrangements

Ludhiana, February 24, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A controversy has surfaced at CT University in Ludhiana, Punjab, after a group of Kashmiri Muslim students alleged that they were denied Sehri and Iftar arrangements in the university mess during the holy month of Ramadan. The students claimed that despite paying regular mess fees, their request for meals during fasting hours was not accommodated.

According to the students, the matter escalated when they approached the administration with their request. They alleged that instead of addressing their concerns, some staff members reportedly used inappropriate language and warned them of possible cancellation of admissions. Some students further claimed they were asked to vacate campus premises.

A short video circulating on social media shows students gathered outside the campus, narrating their grievances and alleging harassment. The authenticity and full context of the video are yet to be officially verified.

Political Reactions and Inquiry Ordered

The issue quickly drew political attention. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah ordered a formal inquiry into the allegations and stated that he would personally take up the matter with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Speaking during a public engagement in Ganderbal, Abdullah assured that the safety and well-being of students from Jammu and Kashmir studying outside the Union Territory would be safeguarded. He emphasized that the Punjab government would ensure appropriate action after reviewing the facts.

Iltija Mufti, daughter of former J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, also reacted to the incident on social media, urging the Punjab government to take strict action if the allegations were found to be true. Her remarks further intensified the public debate surrounding the issue.

Police Intervention and Ongoing Discussions

Following the viral posts and online reactions, Ludhiana Rural Police reached the university campus to assess the situation and help ease tensions. In response to social media queries, the police stated that the matter had been forwarded to senior officers and that action would be taken based on verified facts.

According to sources, a meeting between university authorities and the students was convened in the presence of police officials to resolve the dispute amicably. However, as of now, neither CT University nor the police have issued an official statement detailing their position on the allegations.

Divided Public Opinion

The controversy has triggered widespread debate on social media. Many voices have called for reasonable religious accommodation, citing constitutional protections of equality and freedom of faith. Others argue that educational institutions may not be obligated to provide customized food arrangements based on individual religious requirements.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding the welfare and treatment of students from Jammu and Kashmir studying in other states, particularly during sensitive religious periods.

Awaiting Official Clarification

As investigations proceed, authorities have urged restraint and patience until the inquiry concludes. The university’s media department has indicated that only senior management can comment on the matter once an official statement is prepared.

University Responds to Allegations

Responding to the controversy, Prof. Davinder Singh, speaking on behalf of CT University, stated that the institution has been facilitating Sehri and Iftar meals for Muslim students for the past three to four years during Ramadan.

He explained that this year, certain additional demands were raised by some students regarding meal arrangements, which led to misunderstandings and the subsequent escalation of the issue.

Addressing allegations of abusive behavior by university officials, Prof. Singh said that an internal inquiry has been initiated to examine the claims. He maintained that the university takes such allegations seriously and would review the matter based on established procedures.

Prof. Singh further asserted that the issue has now been resolved. When informed that voices resembling protest slogans were still audible during the phone conversation, he clarified that students were no longer protesting but were instead expressing satisfaction following discussions and the decisions taken.
