February 16: Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring today questioned the Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on the “conflict of interest” with Punjab and asked the state Bharatiya Janata Party leadership to clarify its position on the Punjab waters.
The party held a series of meetings, at the Congress Bhavan here today, with different office bearers including the DCC presidents, MLAs/contested candidates and others to plan the future course of action.
The meetings were presided over by the Congress general secretary in charge of Punjab Bhupesh Bhagel and attended by several other senior leaders.
In an informal interaction with reporters along the sidelines of the meetings Warring pointed out, Saini is the Chief Minister of Haryana and he has been aggressively seeking water from Punjab.
“It is like running with the hare and hunting with the hounds”, he remarked about Saini pointing out that he cannot campaign for the BJP in Punjab and at the same time lay unjustified claim over Punjab’s waters.
Replying to a question about the reported proposal of the Aam Aadmi Party government to appoint two Deputy Chief Ministers to accommodate different castes and religions, the PCC president said, people should be appointed for their competence and not just because they belong to a particular caste or religion.
He pointed out, there is no post of the Deputy Chief Minister in the constitution and a Deputy Chief Minister is just like any other minister. He said, the AAP was apparently resorting to such theatrics in the election year to try to appease different communities and castes without actually empowering them.
At the same time, he added, due representation to all castes and communities must be ensured with real empowerment and not merely token and symbolic representation that AAP is doing.
On the government’s campaign ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ against the drugs, he said, it had completely failed and had now turned into ‘Yudh Jaadu Virudh’ (war against the AAP). He said, had the drugs been finished from Punjab, the AAP would not need to spend money on advertisements as people would themselves say so and that is not the case.
To a question that Amit Shah had accused Rahul Gandhi of spreading disinformation on the trade deal with the US, Warring remarked, “when has Shah accepted the truth spoken by Rahul Gandhi?” But, he added, like in the past, this time also, Rahul would be proved right very soon when the farmers will be badly hit by imports from the US.
On the issue of the AAP claiming that the BJP was trying to poach on its (AAP’s) MLAs, Warring said, although the matter is between the two parties, but the AAP is known for such theatrics as the party made similar claims in the past also without following up with any concrete evidence and proof.
