Better Employment Opportunities Can Effectively Curb Drug Abuse: Punjab Guv Gulab Chand Kataria

Tarn Taran, February 9, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Punjab Governor Shri Gulab Chand Kataria on Sunday said that better employment opportunities are key to effectively curbing drug abuse in the state. He was addressing a meeting with members of the Village Defence Committees at village Seron. Punjab Cabinet Minister Shri Laljit Singh Bhullar was also present on the occasion.

The Governor stated that a neighboring country is conspiring to disturb the state’s atmosphere through the smuggling of drugs and weapons, adding that such attempts are being met with a befitting response.

Emphasizing that the menace of drug abuse cannot be eradicated through government efforts alone, Shri Kataria said that collective participation from all sections of society—including parents, teachers, youth, common citizens, and the administration—is essential. He noted that public awareness against drugs is steadily increasing in Punjab and has begun to take the shape of a mass movement.

The Governor pointed out that unemployment and idleness are among the root causes of drug addiction. He said that by engaging youth in gainful employment and constructive activities, they can be steered away from this social evil.

Referring to Punjab as the land of warriors, saints, and martyrs, the Governor said the state has played a pioneering role in the freedom struggle, national defense, and food production. To restore Punjab’s former glory and leadership role, he stressed the need for a decisive fight against drug abuse.

Highlighting the role of families, Shri Kataria described mothers as the most influential figures in children’s lives and said their role is crucial in protecting children from bad company and substance abuse.

The Governor further underlined the importance of Village Defence Committees in the anti-drug campaign and urged them to remain vigilant and actively monitor their villages. He also sought suggestions from committee members to further strengthen the ongoing campaign.

Speaking on the occasion, Cabinet Minister Shri Laljit Singh Bhullar said that the anti-drug campaign launched by the Punjab Government is receiving overwhelming public support and expressed confidence that Punjab would soon emerge as a vibrant and prosperous state.

Among those present were the Governor’s Secretary Shri Vivek Pratap Singh, DIG Shri Sanehdeep Sharma, Deputy Commissioner Shri Rahul, SSP Shri Surender Lamba, and other senior officials and dignitaries.
