A young leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Lucky Oberoi, was shot dead by unidentified assailants outside a gurdwara in the heart of Jalandhar city on Friday morning, triggering panic in the area.
According to initial reports, Oberoi had visited Gurudwara Singh Sabha in Model Town to pay obeisance and was preparing to leave at around 7:15 am. After coming out of the gurdwara, he sat inside his Thar vehicle when two unidentified men arrived on a white Activa scooter and allegedly opened fire at close range.
Several bullets struck Oberoi, while some also pierced a nearby parked car outside the gurdwara premises. The attackers fled the spot immediately after the incident.
Oberoi was rushed to a private hospital in Model Town, where he was initially declared brought dead. He was later taken to Shriman Hospital, where doctors stated that he was in a critical condition. Medical sources informed the media that Oberoi was still breathing when he was brought in but later suffered a cardiac arrest.
A police team led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Manpreet Singh Dhillon reached the spot and conducted a preliminary inspection. A forensic team was also deployed to collect evidence, while CCTV footage from nearby areas is being examined to identify the assailants. Dhillon said that they were working on the case and the assailants would be nabbed soon.
Lucky Oberoi was known to be close to AAP Jalandhar Cantt Halqa Incharge and former Jalandhar Improvement Trust Chairperson Rajwinder Kaur Thiara.
Eyewitnesses present outside the gurdwara told reporters that Oberoi regularly visited the gurdwara for sewa at the ‘Joda Ghar’. A witness said that they had come out together, and as Oberoi was entering his vehicle, two scooter-borne attackers fired at him. He claimed that three to four bullets hit Oberoi in the chest and head.
Police have registered a case and intensified efforts to trace the accused. Further investigation is underway.
