In a major crackdown on illicit liquor manufacturing, the Excise Department, Jalandhar Zone, conducted a special enforcement drive along the banks of the Sutlej river and recovered around 10,450 litres of ‘laahan’, which was destroyed on the spot.
The operation was carried out under the directions of Deputy Commissioner Excise Sh. S.K. Garg and under the direct supervision of Assistant Commissioner Excise, Range Jalandhar West, Navjeet Singh. The team was led by Navjeet Singh, AETC, and comprised Excise Officer Sunil Gupta and Excise Inspector Shahkot, Bikramjit Singh Ghai, along with excise police and local police staff.
Acting on specific inputs, the team conducted extensive checking and search operations along the Sutlej river banks in villages Danewal, Baupur and Rampur falling under the Shahkot group, which are considered vulnerable pockets for illegal distillation activities.
During the drive, officials recovered 11 empty iron drums, two empty aluminium utensils and 19 tarpaulins concealed in various pits and makeshift setups. Approximately 10,450 litres of laahan stored in these diggies were seized.
As the recovered items were unclaimed and found to be intended for unlawful brewing, the entire material was destroyed at the spot in accordance with legal procedures.
Assistant Commissioner Navjeet Singh said the department has intensified surveillance in riverine and rural areas to curb the menace of illicit liquor, which poses serious health risks to the public and causes significant revenue losses to the government. He added that such special drives will continue in the coming days to ensure strict enforcement of excise laws.
Officials said sustained enforcement measures are being undertaken across the district to dismantle illegal networks and safeguard public safety.
