Mohali, January 28, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
In a shocking incident that has raised serious concerns over public safety, Gurwinder Singh, an accused in the murder case of SOPU chief Gurlal Brar, was shot dead in broad daylight outside the Mohali Court complex on Wednesday.
According to police officials, Gurwinder Singh, a resident of a village near Kharar, had arrived at the court along with his wife in connection with a hearing in a narcotics case. He was on bail in a case involving the recovery of four kilograms of opium and was required to appear before the court on Wednesday.
As he stepped out of his vehicle near the court premises, unidentified assailants opened fire on him, discharging around 10 to 12 rounds. Gurwinder Singh died on the spot, while his wife, who was accompanying him, escaped unhurt.
Eyewitnesses said that the attackers, who were riding a black motorcycle, had been waiting in the area for Gurwinder’s arrival. After carrying out the attack, they fled the scene immediately, triggering panic in the busy court complex.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Nanak Singh, who visited the site, said that the victim had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He confirmed that Gurwinder Singh was also named as an accused in the Gurlal Brar murder case and that his role in the case was under examination.
The DIG stated that police teams have gathered crucial leads and technical evidence and are working to identify and arrest the attackers. He expressed confidence that those involved would be apprehended soon.
Meanwhile, unverified posts circulating on social media platforms claimed that gangsters Goldy Brar, Rohit Godara, and Vicky Pehalwan had taken responsibility for the killing. The posts alleged that Gurwinder Singh was involved in the murder of Gurlal Brar.
In an unverified voice message and social media post, Goldy Brar reportedly accused the police of failing to deliver justice in the Gurlal Brar murder case. He claimed that the system had wrongly portrayed Gurlal Brar as a criminal despite no cases against him and warned that those allegedly involved in his killing would be targeted in the future.
Terming the arrest of his father and mother at the hands of police as gross injustice, Goldy Brar challenged the police saying, “We will react.” Threatening politicians and officials, he further claimed that the wards of politicians and officials were settled at various places outside India and warned that if they desired, they could strike on a daily basis. He urged authorities to desist from what he described as injustice against his family members.
Police officials, however, said that such social media claims, audio messages, and alleged threats are being verified as part of the investigation and cautioned the public against believing unconfirmed information.
The incident comes close on the heels of the recent arrest of Goldy Brar’s parents by Muktsar Police in Amritsar, adding to tensions linked to ongoing gang rivalries in the region.
Authorities have intensified security around courts and sensitive locations in Mohali and neighbouring districts, while investigations continue to establish the motive and identify those behind the attack.
