Chandigarh, January 16, 2026(Yes Punjab News)
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today appealed to Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria to pass necessary directions to ensure protection of former minister Bikram Singh Majithia’s life as it did not have any faith in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government or the DGP, Punjab to take effective steps to safeguard the senior Akali leader.
In a representation to the Governor at the Raj Bhawan, senior SAD leaders while apprising the former about the grave threat to life of Mr Bikram Majithia, also cited the violation of the leader’s fundamental rights as well as misconduct being done unto him at the behest of the AAP government.
The senior leaders including Balwinder Singh Bhunder, Maheshinder Singh Grewal Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, Ganieve Kaur Majithia Advocate Arshdeep Singh Kler and Damanbir Singh Sobti said nothing concrete was being done to safeguard the life of Mr Majithia and that of his family members, despite the directions of the high court following central intelligence inputs that he was likely to be targeted for elimination by the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).
The leaders asserted that as an eye wash and to violate the Akali leader’s fundamental rights further cameras were being installed in the prison cell in the Nabha jail in which he was housed.
Asserting that there was no need for these additional cameras as multiple cameras had already been installed to watch every movement of Mr Majithia. They said attempts were being made to install a camera facing towards the washroom and toilet of Mr Majithia with the intention of recording him undressed or under dressed and without his turban or ‘parna’. The leaders said this was being done to invade the Akali leader’s privacy and cause hurt to his religious sentiments.
Explaining the entire case, the leaders said the attempt to compromise Mr Majithia’s safety started on March 29 when at the behest of chief minister Bhagwant Mann and the ADGP, Security the Akali leader’s security was arbitrarily and illegally withdrawn despite being a Z plus protectee. The leaders said when Mr Majithia approached the high court in this context; DGP Guarav Yadav filed a false affidavit stating there was no threat to the life of the leader from any terrorist outfit or gangsters.
The representation said on January 1 this year two DIGs visited Mr Majithia in jail and informed him that they had inputs that he would be targeted inside the jail premises by the BKI. It said when the jail superintendent remained silent on this issue despite being asked, Mr Majithia informed the chief judicial magistrate about the danger to his life. It said even Mr Majithia’s counsel was not given details with respect to the intelligence inputs on threat perception of the senior leader.
The representation said shockingly the intelligence inputs were circulated in the media in the same manner in which gangsters became aware of the withdrawal of security cover to Sidhu Moosewala. It also cited how during Mrs Ganieve Kaur Majithia’s visit to the Nabha jail on January 15 to meet her husband, cameras were installed to view the meeting. “There is a grave apprehension that the cameras have mikes”.
The leaders submitted to the Governor that they did not have faith in the State government or the DGP, Punjab and that if any loss was caused to Mr Majithia then it should be attributed to the tacit collusion of the chief minister and DGP Gaurav Yadav.
The SAD delegation also urged the Governor to intervene to stop the attack on the freedom of the press by the Aam Aadmi Party government which was intimidating the Punjab Kesri Group with raids on its Presses and associate business.
It said the Punjab Kesri Group was being subjected to a witch hunt since October 21, 2025 following publication of a news item regarding allegations by the opposition pertaining to the National Convener of AAP. It said following this on November 2 all advertisements to the Punjab Kesri Group were stopped and in January raids were conducted at its printing presses as well as a hotel owned by the Group in Jalandhar. It said the excise license as well as electricity connection of the hotel were also cancelled.
Asserting that such acts undermined democracy, it appealed to the Governor to take necessary steps to ensure democracy was not undermined.
