In a significant political development in Punjab, senior leader and former Member of Parliament Jagmeet Singh Brar, his brother and former MLA Ripjit Singh Brar, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s former Officer on Special Duty Onkar Singh Sidhu, Akali leader Charanjit Singh Brar, farmer leader Pritpal Singh, and former Lok Bhalai Party leader Kulwant Singh formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday.
The leaders were inducted into the BJP in the presence of senior party functionaries, including Nayab Singh Saini, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar, Punjab BJP Working President Ashwani Sharma, and party leader Vineet Joshi.
Political Background of Key Entrants
Jagmeet Singh Brar, a former Congress leader, had earlier attempted to establish the Trinamool Congress in Punjab, an initiative that failed to gain traction. He later joined the Shiromani Akali Dal but eventually quit the party. His brother Ripjit Singh Brar is a former MLA.
Charanjit Singh Brar has had a long and eventful political journey. He was once a close associate of Manpreet Singh Badal during their tenure in the Shiromani Akali Dal and later joined him in the People’s Party of Punjab. When Manpreet Singh Badal joined the Congress, Charanjit Brar returned to the Akali Dal, where he became a close aide of Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Subsequently, Charanjit Brar parted ways with Sukhbir Badal and joined rebel Akali leaders who floated Akali Dal Punarsurjeet, headed by former Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh. He recently resigned from that party before formally joining the BJP.
The induction of these leaders is being viewed as part of the BJP’s continued efforts to strengthen its organisational base in Punjab ahead of future political contests.
