Amritpal Singh’s Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) to Enter Tarn Taran By-Poll Battle

Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De), the political outfit led by radical Sikh leader and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, is set to contest the upcoming Tarn Taran Assembly by-election, marking a significant electoral move for the party. The decision was officially announced by Tarsem Singh, father of Amritpal Singh, during an interaction with the media.

The Tarn Taran constituency fell vacant following the recent demise of AAP MLA Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal, who had been battling a prolonged illness. His passing necessitated the by-election, drawing attention from multiple political quarters.

Tarsem Singh clarified that while the party had earlier resolved not to contest any bypolls, it has made an exception for Tarn Taran, citing the seat’s strategic importance and ideological resonance with the party. “This is our stronghold. Tarn Taran is part of the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency, which Amritpal Singh currently represents. We feel it’s our duty to contest and assert our presence,” he stated.

Amritpal Singh, currently lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh Jail under the National Security Act (NSA), continues to be a symbolic figurehead for the party and holds sway in several parts of Punjab, particularly in Tarn Taran and surrounding areas.

This move is expected to add an interesting dimension to the bypolls, especially considering the party’s growing support base among a section of Punjab’s rural and religious electorate. Analysts suggest this could potentially alter the dynamics for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), the Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the region.

With the by-election likely to be fiercely contested, all eyes will be on Waris Punjab De’s candidate announcement, which could set the tone for future political maneuvers by the group in Punjab’s volatile electoral landscape.
