Shiromani Akali Dal president Sardar Sukhbir SIngh Badal said ehre today that he was ready to make “any personal or poitical sacrifice” in the fight to preserve, safeguard and promote the cause of the peasantry in Punjab.
The SAD president was talking to a delegation of the All India (Kul Hind) Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee at his residence this morning.
” Be it the issue of any threat, present or future, to the Minimum Support Price Regime with assured marketing of farmers’ crop or to the Free Powerr facility for the farmers introduced by Sardar Parkash SIngh Badal-led SAD-BJP Government in the state , I and my party wil never allow the current dispensation to be disturbed nor alllow anyyone to rob the already beleaguered pesantry through any fancifull new ideas. These two subjects are critical for the peasantary’s interest and I and my party are absoutely clear on and committed to the farmers’ welfare on these and otheer issues.
Regarding the alleged confusion on the intricacies of the Ordinances, Mr Badal said, ” As farmers, we are simple and straight-foward people and we want everything put in simple and straight words. I have alreaddy conveyed to the Government of India that neither the MSP regime with assured marketing nor the Free Poweer faccility in Punjab can be allowed to be tinkered with under any pretext,” said Mr Badal.
In response to a question from the leader of the delegation on on the assured marketing under the MSP regime, , the SAD president said that he had personallly, repeatedly and throroughy studied the three Ordinances issued by the Government of India and found nothing in them which might impy that the government would wihdraw from the market or from the MSP.
“But as there had been protests against the Ordinances and because some of those who criticising the Ordinance were otherwise well meaning people, I had personally taken up the issue with the government of India at the highest level . They categoricaly assured me that there was neither a move nor any question of the government withdrawing from the purchase of farmers’ designated crops at MSP.”
Mr Badal said that though at the personal level he had been personally satisfied and convinced that the Government of India had done nothing that would mean putting an end to the MSP regime, he wanted the Unjon Government to reiterate and reinforce these commitments in this regard in public so that there shoulld be no apprehension in the minds of the farmers about any move or intention of the Centre to back out of the MSP regime.
“That is why the Union Minister for Agriculture issued not just one but two separate statements, categorically committing th Government of India to continue with the present regime and not to do anything that disturbs the free power facility to farmers in Punjab.”
The former Deputy CM that he would personallly lead the farmers if MSP regime and Free Power facility to farmers is stopped or even diluted.
