The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today demanded a formal inquiry monitored by a judge of the Punjab and Haryana high court to ascertain why the Congress government had misled the Election Commission regarding IG Kunwar Vijay Pratap’s transfer from the SIT investigating police actions at Kotkapura and Behbalkalan even as he said new revelations of the officer being reprimanded by the high court proved that he was a serial offender.
In a statement here, former minister Bikram Singh Majithia said the latest revelations of the reprimand from the high court indicated that the IG was in the habit of unprofessional conduct. He said as per the order by a former chief justice of the high court, it was found that he had taken the law into his own hands by meddling in a civil dispute.
He said in a rare case for a police officer, the high court even imposed a penalty of Rs 5,000 on him and said it was only letting him off because of his uniform. “The IG was also asked to offer an unconditional apology to the petitioner and his son proving he had misused his position to settle personal scores”.
Mr Majithia said earlier there was also the case of all four officers of the SIT investigating the Kotkapura and Behbalkalan police actions writing a letter to the DGP questioning the IG’s professionalism and disassociating themselves from the inquiry.
He said the mentality of the IG was such that instead of realizing his mistake, he belittled and even ridiculed his fellow officers and senior colleagues by stating that he was investigating the case as per international standards.
The Akali leader said the reprimand by the Election Commission was also out in the open. “Now it is for the Congress government to disclose its give and take with the controversial IG. I am asking this question because the Congress government is providing constant shelter to the IG and did not proceed against him even when the EC pointed out that he was making sensational and political statements. It needs to be ascertained on which Congress leader’s order the IG is acting and indulging in a vendetta fuelled inquiry aimed at politicizing the ghastly incidents of sacrilege in the State”.
Predicting that the IG might join the Congress party in the near future, the SAD leader said Kunwar Vijay Pratap might represent the Congress party in the coming elections. “This is not just our personal opinion, even some senior officers in the police force are having doubts about the IG’s future course of action and they share our opinion as well” he added.
Mr Majithia said the SAD would continue to expose the IG and was committed to investigating the actions of the IG as well as Congress leaders who were in league with him once it was returned to power. “We are also open to any inquiry into the police actions at Kotkapura and Behbalkalan but stand for a transparent inquiry headed by an independent agency monitored by the apex court”, he added.
