Veteran Journalist Surinder Awasthi cremated, Punjab Guv Badnore mourns demise

The mortal remains of veteran journalist and former Information Commissioner Punjab Sh Surinder Awasthi (70) who passed away yesterday after a brief illness, was consigned to flames at Sector 25, Chandigarh.

Elder daughter of Mr. Awasthi lit the pyre. He is survived by his wife, and two daughters.

Governor Punjab and Administrator UT Chandigarh, Sh. V. P. Singh expressed grief over the demise of the prominent scribe. In his condolence message, he said Sh. Awasthi has left an indelible mark through his passionate writings while working for prominent media organisations before joining as the State Information Commissioner. He authored a book titled ‘Lockdown’ which was released in July this year showed his commitment and active involvement in the current situation till his last, said the Governor.

He offered his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed to the Almighty to grant eternal peace to the departed soul and give ample strength to the family to get over the extremely emotional phase.

Sh. Surinder Awasthi will always be remembered for raising his voice for the freedom of press, his passing away is a big loss for the media farernity which cannot be filled.

A wreath was placed on behalf of the Governor Punjab as a mark of respect to the departed soul.

Joint Directors of Punjab Public Relations Department Sh. Ajit Kanwal Singh and Sh. Randeep Singh Ahluwalia laid the Wreaths on behalf of CM Punjab, Secretary and Director Information and Public Relations Department Punjab. Wreath was also laid on behalf of Chandigarh Press Club.
