Esteemed journalist Sardar Kashmir Singh Chawla, widely known as KS Chawla, passed away on Wednesday evening after battling illness for several weeks. A respected figure in Punjab’s journalistic and political spheres, Chawla leaves behind an extraordinary legacy spanning over six decades of uncompromised reportage and fearless commentary.
Belonging to a distinguished family of journalists, KS Chawla’s connection with journalism began in the early 1960s and remained unbroken throughout his life. Often described as “married to journalism,” Chawla witnessed and documented Punjab’s complex political journey with unmatched insight and integrity.
He served as a staff correspondent for The Tribune for nearly 40 years, playing a pivotal role in shaping public understanding of key events. From covering the inauguration of Punjab Agricultural University in 1963 to the tumultuous years of militancy, Chawla provided detailed and objective reports across seven districts of Punjab during the most turbulent times.
Known for his spontaneous writing style and exceptional typing speed, KS Chawla earned admiration from readers around the world. His crisp analysis, precise reporting, and dedication to factual accuracy won him a place in the hearts of readers, politicians, bureaucrats, and fellow journalists alike.
Even after his retirement, Chawla continued to contribute thoughtfully to political discourse in Punjab. He authored three significant books:
Resurrecting Punjab: A Journo’s Journey (2018)
Punjab: Victim of Factional Power Politics
Leaderless Punjab (2025)
He also actively supported and contributed to The Barricade, a monthly journal edited by his brother Taranjit Singh Chawla.
Before joining The Tribune, KS Chawla held editorial roles at several prestigious publications, including Partap, The Indian Express, Financial Express, and The Times of India. His career was marked by unwavering ethics, clear-headed analysis, and a deep commitment to journalistic responsibility.
KS Chawla is survived by his brothers Sardar GS Chawla and Sardar Taranjit Singh Chawla, both veteran journalists. His sister-in-law Dr. (Mrs.) Manju Chawla, wife of Taranjit Singh Chawla, served as the Principal of Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan Campus, Ludhiana.
Though he remained unmarried, KS Chawla was deeply rooted in his family and community. He maintained strong relationships and earned respect across all strata of society.
One of his most recent and impactful social contributions was the establishment of the Senior Citizen Bhawan in Rajguru Nagar, Ludhiana, a project realized with government support. He also served as the President of the Senior Citizen Bhawan, further reflecting his dedication to community welfare.
KS Chawla’s cremation will take place on Thursday, June 26 at 11:30 AM at Model Town Extension, Ludhiana.
His voice, clarity, and commitment to truth will be sorely missed, but his legacy will live on in Punjab’s journalistic history and the countless lives he touched.
