Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Union Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa passed away on Wednesday evening at the age of 89. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Mohali after battling age-related health complications. Dhindsa had been admitted two to three days prior to his demise.
A towering figure in Punjab’s political landscape, Dhindsa had served as Lok Sabha MP from Sangrur and held key portfolios as Union Minister for Sports, Chemicals, and Fertilizers in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government.
His political journey spanned decades, marked by leadership roles within the Shiromani Akali Dal, including the position of Secretary General, where he was considered second only to the party patriarch, Parkash Singh Badal. His legacy includes a notable influence in shaping Punjab’s political and developmental narrative.
In 2020, after being expelled from the SAD along with his son Parminder Singh Dhindsa—who had served as Punjab’s Finance Minister—the duo formed the SAD (Sanyukt). However, in March 2024, Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa re-merged his faction with the Sukhbir Singh Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal, closing a significant chapter of political division.
Dhindsa is survived by his wife, son, and two daughters.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed deep condolences, praising Dhindsa’s unwavering commitment to public service. “Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa devoted his life to the welfare of the people of Punjab. His contribution to the state and the nation will always be remembered,” Mann said in his official statement, offering prayers for the departed soul and strength to the grieving family.
