On Tuesday afternoon, August 27, 2025, representatives from the UNITED SIKHS legal team, and two private attorneys, met with Mr. Harjinder Singh at the St. Lucie County Jail.
As the community grieves the tragic loss of life, UNITED SIKHS stands in solidarity with the families whose loved ones have departed, sharing in their pain and praying for healing.
During the visit, the legal team submitted two rights-based appeals for consideration to the relevant authorities. First, the organization requested that Mr. Singh be permitted to wear his dastar (Sikh turban), in accordance with his religious beliefs.
Second, the legal team sought to meet with Mr. Singh to ensure he is safe, to help him prepare his future defense and to reassure the community that he is being treated fairly while in custody.
“Contrary to speculative narratives, Mr. Singh conveyed to me a deep sense of sorrow,” stated Natalie Knight-Tai, a seasoned criminal defense attorney who visited Mr. Singh yesterday as part of the UNITED SIKHS team.
“There’s a sense of spirituality that emanated from Mr. Harjinder Singh when he entered the room. He spoke softly and expressed appreciation for his family and friends. He sincerely wishes to tell the families what happened,” Ms. Knight-Tai said.
“UNITED SIKHS and hundreds of thousands of people on social media are assisting Mr. Singh because everyone deserves and is in need of defense when faced with the bureaucracy that is the criminal justice system,” stated Tejinder Bains, a Criminal Defense Attorney based in New York City and UNITED SIKHS’ Legal Advisor. “We pray for the victims and their families and we act so that the rule of law prevails,” stated Mr. Bains.
Chief Legal Officer, with UNITED SIKHS, Wanda Sanchez Day stated “UNITED SIKHS remains committed to ensuring that all individuals are afforded full legal rights and human dignity.” “The organization will continue to monitor the case and pursue all appropriate legal and advocacy channels to safeguard Mr. Singh’s religious freedoms, ensure accurate representation of his position and that the law is fairly applied,” she said.
