United Sikhs joined the civil rights communities today to call on U.S. Congress Members to sign on to a letter urging President Biden to ensure that black immigrants are not treated inhumanely. The Bicameral Letter to End Disparate Treatment of Black Migrants can be found here.
The letter was circulated by various Congress Members who have shown solidarity with black immigrant families who for decades have been treated differently by the immigration authorities in the U.S.
“We can end policies that disproportionately affect these communities,” stated Manvinder Singh, United Sikhs, Advocacy Director.
Immigration rules like those found in Title 42 of U.S. Immigration Code, which allows the government to deport migrants, are applied in ways that have a disparate impact on communities of color.
“Our country has for centuries visited inhumane treatment upon immigrants of color that deprive us all of the contributions these communities can make to the fabric of our society. We cannot stand by and do nothing. It is time to put an end to discriminatory practices and to educate our leaders to provide aid to all communities regardless of race, national origen or creed,” Mr. Singh stated.
