Two young women from Nepal allegedly died by suicide in Bengaluru’s Yelahanka area after facing opposition from their families over their relationship, police said on Friday.
The deceased were identified as Sirjana and Rita, who were relatives and had grown up together in Nepal. According to the preliminary investigation, the two had studied together and developed a close relationship over the years. Police said they faced criticism and pressure from people in their native village over their decision to remain together.
Their relatives reportedly brought them to Bengaluru about a month ago in an attempt to separate them. The women were subsequently accommodated in different areas, with Rita staying in Fraser Town and Sirjana in Jakkur.
Despite the separation, the two reportedly continued to meet several times a week. Police said family members allegedly discussed plans to arrange marriages for them with men and told them that society would not accept them living together as partners.
Investigators are examining whether the emotional distress caused by the separation, along with pressure to marry and alleged social disapproval, contributed to their deaths.
The women were found hanging from a tree opposite Kisar Hotel on Jakkur Road in Shivanahalli on Thursday. Passersby alerted police after noticing the bodies.
Personnel from Yelahanka Police Station reached the spot and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered, while statements from family members and relatives are being recorded.
Police are also verifying the women’s exact ages and other personal details, as initial records reportedly mentioned them as being 22 and 23, while other details placed their ages at 24.
Investigators stressed that the findings regarding their relationship and alleged family opposition are based on the preliminary inquiry, with further evidence being collected to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
