Hollywood star Tom Cruise has described a challenging 10-minute monologue in his upcoming film Digger as his favourite scene, praising director Alejandro González Iñárritu for the way the sequence was staged and filmed in a single take.
Cruise was speaking to Indian actress Avneet Kaur, who shared a glimpse of her conversation with the actor on Instagram.
Discussing the scene, Cruise said the 10-minute monologue was filmed as one continuous shot and required considerable preparation, skill and imagination from everyone involved.
“I’ve never played a character like this,” Cruise said, describing the film as an unusually creative experience. He added that working on the monologue with Iñárritu felt like a “dance” between the actor, camera and director.
According to Cruise, the scene depended on carefully timed beats, movement and staging, with Iñárritu coordinating the sequence while Cruise performed it as an actor. He said he only performed the scene a few times before completing the final version in a single take.
The actor also spoke about developing the character’s voice and physicality, saying the performance had to serve both the dramatic and comedic timing of the story. He revealed that he wore a heavy fat suit for the role, adding another layer of physical preparation to the sequence.
Cruise said the process required him to understand how his movement worked within the costume while also maintaining the rhythm of the scene and the framing of the shot.
Calling the experience particularly enjoyable, Cruise described Digger as “the most original film” he had ever read and said it was also one of the most moving films he had seen.
He added that being given the opportunity to play such a character was a privilege.
The film marks Cruise’s collaboration with Iñárritu on a project that has generated considerable interest, with the actor’s comments highlighting the demanding performance and filmmaking process behind the upcoming movie.
