RJD leader and Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav has stepped up his criticism of the state government over police action against students protesting alleged examination irregularities and paper leaks in Siwan.
Yadav said he would meet Bihar Governor and apprise him of the details available to him, while seeking accountability and an impartial investigation into the incident.
Speaking to the media, the RJD leader said he had not received a satisfactory explanation regarding allegations of firing during the police action. He said he had already met the Director General of Police (DGP) and conveyed his concerns.
Yadav questioned who authorised the alleged use of force against the protesting students and specifically raised concerns over the reported use of AK-47 rifles.
He said the identities and responsibilities of officials who ordered the action must be established and argued that holding only a constable responsible would not be sufficient.
“The responsibility should be fixed at the appropriate level, including among senior officials associated with the Home Department,” he said, while demanding that authorities establish where the alleged order originated.
Yadav also said he had requested Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav to visit Bihar and meet students allegedly injured during the police action. He said Opposition parties were jointly raising the issue and would continue to demand accountability and an impartial probe.
The RJD leader also targeted the state government over pending payments to employees and other sections of society.
He raised the issue of unpaid salaries of Sanskrit, Urdu and Persian teachers, besides outstanding dues of sanitation workers, pensioners and other employees.
Yadav alleged that the government frequently cites financial constraints and an empty treasury when questions concerning employees’ and citizens’ rights are raised. He urged the state government to clear all pending payments and ensure that employees and beneficiaries receive their dues on time, particularly ahead of the festive season.
With Yadav planning to meet the Governor, the political dispute over the Siwan student-police confrontation is likely to intensify. The RJD leader has repeatedly sought accountability and a probe into the circumstances surrounding the police action.
