Sukhpal Khaira urges Capt Amarinder to remove DGP Dinkar Gupta in view of CAT order

Chandigarh, Jan 18, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

In a statement issued here today, Sukhpal Singh Khaira MLA and former LoP said he welcomed the resolution passed in the Vidhan Sabha opposing the divisive and unpopular CAA law passed by the Modi government. Khaira said the said CAA law had created total unrest in the country dividing people on religious lines.

Khaira said it was sad that the BJP government is refusing to reconsider the draconian law at a time when even students had come on streets to oppose it. Khaira also severely condemned the brutal attack on JNU students by masked state sponsored goons. Khaira said instead of nabbing and booking the said masked “goondas”, the Delhi police acting partially had wrongly booked student leaders including Aishe Ghosh.

Khaira said while he supports the CM on CAA, he expects Capt. Amarinder Singh to implement in letter and spirit the removal of DGP Dinkar Gupta by the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT).

Khaira said it was an open secret that the Punjab government had flouted all norms and rules while appointing Dinkar Gupta as DGP, by superseding five senior IPS officers to him. He said this erroneous appointment not only violated the Supreme Court directions but was against the principle of natural justice. Khaira said he hoped that the government would not move the High Court against the CAT ruling and will immediately appoint the senior most officer as DGP in place of Mr. Gupta.

Khaira said in case the government challenges the CAT order it would be presumed that Capt. Amarinder Singh doesn’t respect the law and has double standards, i.e. he opposes a bad law like CAA but supports an unconstitutional appointment.

Khaira said the appointment of DGP Gupta now proven as illegitimate, unconstitutional and unfair only goes to show that the top appointments in the Punjab police are based on political considerations rather than merits. Khaira said the people of Punjab can never expect fair working from an officer who has been appointed unfairly by ignoring the rights of officers senior to him.

Lastly Khaira said he was pained to note that the Amritsar police had booked 7-8 youth for vandalism under serious sections like attempt to murder (section 307), for damaging merely the platform of statues on heritage street outside the Golden Temple.

Khaira said both the SAD-BJP and now Congress government filed no FIR against guilty police officers who killed two Sikh youth at Behbal Kalan in 2015, but prefer to book youth agitating against disrespect to Sikh sentiments by putting vague statues at a pious place like Darbar Sahib.

He urged the SGPC and government to replace the said (Bhangra-Giddha) statues with the likes of Mai Bhago and Bhai Jaita, that are a source of inspiration for people at large. He sought immediate and unconditional release of detained youth.
