Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal today condemned the police high handedness against a section of farmers who had collected at his residence in Badal village yesterday and said the incident seemed to have been orchestrated by State police chief Dinkar Gupta with the blessings of chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh.
In a statement here, the SAD President said even though he had requested the Muktsar police to allow all farmers to collect at his residence and facilitate his meeting with them, an incident was engineered and some farmers had been hurt.
He said farmers were collecting in front of the residences of all MPs in the State but it was only in front of his residence that an untoward incident occurred. “Such kind of politics which strikes out at farmers for petty political gains is condemnable”.
Mr Sukhbir Badal also asked the chief minister to get the entire case inquired into. He said it should be ascertained as to who stopped a section of farmers from approaching his residence when he had repeatedly requested the Muktsar police to let all farmers meet him. He said it should also be ascertained as to who committed high handedness against the farmers and due action should be taken against the police personnel responsible for this.
Mr Badal said he had also learnt that the Muktsar police had registered two cases against the farmers. He said there was no need to register such cases as it would only lead to harassment of farmers over a long period of time. “I request the SSP, Muktsar to withdraw the case against the farmers or else the SAD would be constrained to hold a dharna in front of his office to get the cases withdrawn”.
The SAD President also reached out to the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee whose members had collected at his residence yesterday as well as other farmer organizations saying he was ready for a discussion on all points raised by them about the central agricultural ordinances.
He said he was ready to go to the farmer organizations as and where required by them. He said he was also ready to accompany farmer organizations to seek a detailed clarification on all issues related to the central ordinances from the Union agriculture minister.
Stating that ‘Kisani’ was above everything for the SAD, Mr Badal said the cause of the farmers would always come first for him. He said this was why he had invited the leaders of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee including Satnam Singh Pannu and Swarn Singh Pandher inside his residence for a detailed discussion and later even addressed all the farmers who had collected in front of his residence.
He said the SAD was also a party of farmers and had always fought for the rights of farmers. “MSP and assured procurement of wheat and paddy will remain as long as I am president of SAD and we will not allow tinkering with these twin pillars of farmer prosperity even twenty years from now. I am ready for any sacrifice to ensure MSP and assured marketing of food grains continue in their present form”, the SAD President added.
