Sukhbir Badal asks Modi to arrange airlifting of Sikhs who want to come to India from Afghanistan

Chandigarh, March 27, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal today asked the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “immediately make arrangements for airlifting the trapped Sikhs in Afghanistan who are keen on returning to their home land.”

In a letter to the PM today, Mr Badal also requested that the Indian embassy officials in Kabul be asked to coordinate with the Punjabi especially Sikh community leaders there in this regard. He said that there are a large number of Sikh families which want to be flown out of that country at the earliest. “Arrangements need to be made at the earliest for airlifting them back to their homeland,” he said.

The SAD president mentioned that he was fully aware of the pressures on the government in view of the global fight on Coronavirus “but the entire patriotic and peace loving Sikh community is looking towards you to take steps to ensure their safety in countries where they face a possible threat.”

Mr Badal also appealed to the Prime Minster to directly intervene at the highest international level to ensure the safety of Sikhs not only Afghanistan but in all sensitive countries where the Sikhs can be targeted. “It is a very delicate situation and the country needs to operationalize all diplomatic channels to ensure the safety and security of Sikhs abroad,” said Mr Badal in his letter to the PM.

The SAD president said that he had received many desperate phone calls from the Sikhs in Afghanistan and several other countries seeking “aggressive diplomatic and governmental action for focusing on their safety and security.”
