Students from other states ‘grabbing’ seats in Punjab Medical Colleges due to loopholes: Khaira

Chandigarh, June 6, 2019 (Yes Punjab News)

Sukhpal Singh Khaira President of Punjab Ekta Party(PEP) today demanded from Punjab government to plug the loop holes in the admission process of government medical colleges in Punjab to protect the interests of local students and block students from other states who are exploiting rules to grab the MBBS seats in Punjab.

In a statement issued here Khaira said that due to faulty admission criteria, the students of other states are eating into the share of Punjab students in the state run medical colleges. He said that it was grave injustice with the meritorious students who want to get admission in government medical colleges despite scoring high marks in the entrance test.

Punjab and Haryana High Court has already in 2014 ordered to change the rules for admission in MBBS.

Khaira said that under the existing MBBS admission rules, students who pass out their higher secondary classes from Punjab are eligible for admission in government medical colleges in the state. He said that students from Haryana and Himachal Pradesh and even from Chandigarh get dummy admission in the Punjab schools in connivance with the school authorities.

He stated that these students get private coaching and score higher marks in PMT entrance test- to jeopardize the future of students who belong to Punjab.

He said that last year 35 such students were identified who belonged to other states and managed to get admission in Punjab’s government medical colleges. He said that a girl of Ludhiana (name withheld) a medical aspirant who is now studying in a private medical college had approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court to get justice.

The High Court had told the Punjab government to make the matriculation examination condition for admission to MBBS. The previous SAD-BJP and Capt Amarinder Singh governments had not implemented the decision.

Khaira said that students from Haryana and Himachal Pradesh who are also domicile of their native state obtain Punjab’s domicile certificate by exploiting rules on the basis of their higher secondary studies in Punjab.

He said that these students hold dual domicile and get admission at their convenience. He added that in Haryana domicile is given only if one is born in the state while in Punjab birth condition is not mandatory.

Khaira said that large number of parents of aspiring students had made representations to Punjab Chief Minister, Health Minister and Vice Chancellor Baba Farid University of Health Sciences Faridkot not to allow students from other states to avail double benefit state quota of MBBS and BDS courses.

The parents demanded to implement Punjab government’s decision of March 2016 class Tenth certificate mandatory for admission in Punjab medical colleges. He said that Punjab Government due to mala fide intentions was not keen to implement the notification of March 2016.

Khaira said that Punjab government had issued the notification of laying matriculation condition for medical admission on the basis of Punjab and Haryana High Court decision of July 2, 2014. By not implementing the decision, present government was also making contempt of court, Khaira added. He said that his party would raise the issue at every platform to force the present government to safeguard the interests of local students.

Khaira added that politicians, bureaucrats and other influential people who live in Chandigarh and neighboring states were exploiting loopholes in the system and grabbing seats meant for Punjab students.

He urged the Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to take call of the aggrieved parents and deliver justice to them. He said that when other states do not allow Punjab students to compete in their states for profession courses, then why Punjab?
