SKM announces Nation-wide protest against Fuel Price Hike on July 8; gears up for protest at Parliament

New Delhi, July 6, 2021 (Yes Punjab News)
Samyukt Kisan Morcha has announced that during the upcoming Parliament Session starting from July 19th 2021, it will protest outside the Parliament. Starting from July 22nd 2021, every day, five protestors from each organisation associated with SKM will protest outside Indian Parliament. SKM will also write to Opposition Parties to ensure that they actively pick up the demands of the farmers.

“We want the Opposition Parties to ensure that the farmers’ agitation and its demands become the main issue and that the government is brought under pressure to fulfill our demands. We do not want the Opposition to create ruckus or just walk out from the proceedings, but engage constructively inside the Parliament, while farmers protest outside”, said SKM.

On July 8th, protests will be organised across India, in response to SKM’s call, against fuel price hikes. At designated public places, protestors are expected to come with their vehicles to be parked on the roadside, and with empty cooking gas cylinders.

Here, they will protest with posters, placards and banners that put out messages like “Halve the prices of diesel, petrol and cooking gas”, along with “Repeal 3 central farm acts” and “Enact a MSP Guarantee law for all commodities” etc. This will be done between 10am and 12noon. Diesel and Petrol prices are about 100 rupees per litre in India today. It is known that 65% of the fuel prices being paid by common citizens goes to the government as taxes.

The fuel prices in India right now are significantly higher than in other countries including our neighboring countries like Srilanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. In fact, aviation fuel is cheaper than the fuel that ordinary consumers like farmers have to use. Citizens cannot continue to bear this burden, and the nation-wide protests are being organised in this context.

It is reported that BJP State President in Punjab has written to the state Chief Minister, seeking time to discuss the protests being faced by party leaders everywhere. It is necessary that leaders of BJP and other allied parties understand the root cause of the farmers’ anger, instead of complaining about the expression of that anger and frustration.

These leaders should realise that for the farmers, it is a matter of life and death, and that is what the current struggle is about. In Haryana, because of a black flag protest by farmers in Panipat, MLA Mahipal Tanda cancelled a road inauguration event that he was expected to participate in. It is reported that the MLA sent his brother for the inauguration in his place!

BJP is gloating over Uttar Pradesh District Panchayat President polls. It is reported that the Chief Minister said that the party won in those districts where the Kisan Andolan has its main roots.

The party and CM are forgetting that just a short while back, when Panchayat elections were held in the state, only around 765 out of 3050 seats went to BJP supported candidates. The most seats, and significantly more than any other party including BJP were won by independents. This was in the case of direct elections where farmers and others have already given their clear mandate.

The Party’s and the Chief Minister’s interpretation of the latest results as a mandate of farmers is ridiculous, given that farmers have already given their mandate and it was clearly against BJP. The latest result was manufactured by pressure, intimidation and cheating.
