Sikhs can never forget June 1984 Ghallughara, says Akal Takht Jathedar; 37th Martyrdom Day observed as remembrance

Amritsar, June 6, 2021 (Yes Punjab News)
The Sikh martyrs including Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale, Bhai Amrik Singh, Baba Tthara Singh, General Subeg Singh and others, who got martyred during the military attack by the Congress government of India in June 1984 on Sri Akal Takht Sahib, were remembered during the annual ‘Shaheedi Samagam’ (Martyrdom Ceremony) held on June 6 at Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

The ceremony was held by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), in which, after the bhog of Sri Akhand Path Sahib the ardas (prayer) was offered by Bhai Sultan Singh and head granthi of Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib, Giani Jagtar Singh recited the holy hukamnama.

SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur, Jathedar Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Harpreet Singh, Jathedar Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib Giani Raghbir Singh, additional head granthi Giani Jagtar Singh, Tarna Dal chief Baba Nihal Singh Harian Velan, Dal Baba Bidhi Chand Samprada chief Baba Avtar Singh Sursingh, Damdami Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa, and many prominent personalities were present.

On this occasion, Jathedar Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Harpreet Singh while addressing the Sikh ‘Qaum’ (community) appealed to sit together by setting aside the differences under the patronage of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

“The Army attack on Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib, the spiritual abode of humanity, and Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the highest temporal shrine of the Sikh Qaum, by the Congress government of India in June 1984 is such a wound that oozes every year. The Sikh Qaum can never forget this Ghallughara”, said Giani Harpreet Singh.

“The pain of the Sikhs is unbearable but it is important to use this as the community’s power. The Sikh organisations and jathebandis are the strength of the community and these should not be allowed to be weakened. Today, when the Sikhs are attacked anywhere; the entire community gets alerted and stands united with them. The opposition by Sikhs in front of Parliaments and assemblies on several issues is evidence of the high spirit of Sikhs. The Sikh community takes this strength from the Gurus and martyrs”, said Jathedar Akal Takht Sahib.

“Several emails were received to announce June 1984 as Amritsar Genocide but this has already been accepted as Sikh Ghallughara (Holocaust) as the genocidal attacks were done at 37 other places as well. During this attack in June 1984, the Sikhs had given a befitting reply to the attacking Army. The Sikh community and media should refrain from calling this Ghallughara as Operation Blue Star”, said Giani Harpreet Singh.

While offering tributes to the martyrs, the head granthi Giani Jagtar Singh said, “In June 1984, the Congress government of India had attacked the innocent pilgrims with tanks and this attack will be remembered forever. At that time, apart from Sri Akal Takht Sahib and Sri Harmandar Sahib, the attack was also launched at 37 other gurdwaras.”

On this occasion, the son of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, Bhai Ishar Singh; daughter of martyr Bhai Amrik Singh, Bibi Satwant Kaur and his brother Bhai Manjit Singh Bhurakohna; son of Bhai Nachhatar Singh Bhalwan, Bhai Bhupinder Singh Bhalwan and family members of many others along with prominent personalities were honoured with Siropao (robe of honour) by the Sikh leaders.

On this occasion, head granthi of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Gurmukh Singh, SGPC senior vice-president Surjit Singh Bhitewad, general secretary Bhagwant Singh Sialka, chief secretary Harjinder Singh Dhami, SGPC executive committee members Satwinder Singh Tohra, Bhupinder Singh Bhalwan, Ajmer Singh Khera, SGPC members, secretaries, employees and others were present.
