The Youth Akali Dal (YAD) today said Punjabi song writer Shree Brar was arrested and tortured by the Punjab government on the directions of union home minister Amit Shah as punishment for writing the ‘Kisan Anthem’.
Terming the arrest, torture and subsequent isolation of Shree Brar by the Patiala Police as vindictive and against policing norms, YAD President Parambans Singh Romana said Shree Brar had given a huge boost to the Kisan Andolan by penning a song which had become its unofficial anthem.
“The song – Swaraja piche Barigate paaye hoi ne – inspired lakhs of people to join the Kisan movement which was not to the liking of the centre as well as the home ministry. This is why Shree Brar has been singled out for punishment with relation to another song he wrote one month back”.
Mr Parambans Romana along with members of the YAD also approached the SSP, Patiala and requested to meet Shree Brar but was denied permission for the same. He condemned this besides castigating the Patiala Police for using the excuse that Shree Brar was glorifying violence to arrest and torture him.
“While the YAD is against glorification of violence, there are so many other singers who have done much worse but continue to roam in vehicles of Congress leaders even after being issued summons by the courts”.
Deploring this new trend to target singers and writers to force them to keep away from the Kisan Andolan, Mr Romana said there were increasing reports of singers being issued notices by the Enforcement Directorate, Income Tax and even under FERA to intimidate them.
“All this is being done by the Home ministry and the Punjab government is following the commands of Mr Amit Shah blindly. While this proves that both the centre and the Congress government in Punjab are working in tandem to derail the farmer agitation, it also proves that the remote control of the Punjab government is with Mr Amit Shah”.
He also condemned the fact that the union home ministry was also calling the shots as far as postings of officers in Punjab was concerned and said the situation was such that even Congress leaders were complaining about this.
Asserting that the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) would not let this conspiracy succeed, Mr Romana appealed to song writers and intellectuals to continue to work for the success of the farmer agitation. “We will provide all assistance required, including legal aid, for all those who are being victimized in Punjab because they are associated with the Kisan Andolan”, the YAD leader added.
