SGPC to commemorate July 4, 1955 attack on Darbar Sahib: Jagir Kaur

Amritsar, June 30, 2021 (Yes Punjab News)
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has decided to organise an event to commemorate the attack on Sri Darbar Sahib by the then Congress government on July 4, 1955 during the Punjabi Suba Morcha.

To commemorate the attack, Sri Akhand Path Sahib will be started at Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib Diwan Hall on July 2, and their bhog will be held on July 4.

Talking to the media at a press conference at SGPC office on Wednesday, SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur said, “Before the military attack on Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib and Sri Akal Takht Sahib by the Congress government of India in June 1984, the attack was also launched at this holy shrine to crush the Punjabi Suba Morcha in 1955. The attack took place at midnight on July 3 and 4, 1955. During this attack, the government sent a large number of police personnel to Sri Darbar Sahib complex, under the leadership of DIG Mahasha Ashwani Kumar Sharma.”

Bibi Jagir Kaur said that the then Prime Minister of India of Congress government was Jawaharlal Nehru and the Chief Minister of Punjab was Bhim Sen Sachar.

SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur said, “The Congress have always committed injustice with the Sikhs who have sacrificed more than 80 per cent of their lives for the freedom of the country. The central Sikh shrine Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib was attacked just seven years after independence. The intention of the Congress class which committed genocide of Sikhs in 1984 has remained anti-Sikh from the very beginning.”

Bibi Jagir Kaur said that on July 4, 1955, a large number of police forces were sent to Sri Darbar Sahib, and they were instructed to suppress the Punjabi Suba Morcha by any means.

“Police entered the premises of Sri Darbar Sahib with shoes. Shells were fired at the Sikhs associated with Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib Diwan Hall. Langar Sri Guru Ramdas Ji was attacked and shots were fired from the verandahs of Sri Darbar Sahib parikarma. Also, Giani Bhupinder Singh, head granthi of Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib, manager Gurdial Singh, SGPC secretary Giani Teja Singh and Prof Harbhajan Singh, a large number of Akali Dal leaders including Sangat (devotees) were arrested”, said Bibi Jagir Kaur.

SGPC president said it has been decided to organize an event to make the youths of the community aware of this incident.

She said the event will be held on July 4 at Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib Diwan Hall. She also said that Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib was specially targeted at that time, therefore, it has been chosen as the venue for this event.

Bibi Jagir Kaur said, “Four teargas shells fired during the attack on Sri Darbar Sahib in July 1955 which are preserved in the Central Sikh Museum, would also be shown to the Sangat.”

The SGPC president said that the purpose of observing this day is awareness among the generations of the community about the story of atrocities committed against them.

She also appealed to the Sangat to attend the event.

On this occasion the SGPC senior vice-president Surjit Singh Bhitewad, member Bawa Singh Gumanpura, Harjap Singh Sultanwind, Harpal Singh Jalla, superintendent Malkit Singh Beharwal, OSDs to SGPC president Dr Amrik Singh Latifpur and Dr Sukhbir Singh, manager Gurinder Singh Mathrewal, honorary secretary of secretariat Sri Akal Takht Sahib Gurmeet Singh and others were present.
