SGPC starts process for admission to Girls Sports Academy

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Bibi Jagir Kaur on Saturday started a two-day sports trial at Punjab Armed Police (PAP) Ground in Jalandhar, for a sports academy being set up for girls.

It is notable that SGPC president Jagir Kaur had recently announced to set up a separate sports directorate for girls and run a sports academy for the discipline including hockey, basketball and athletics.

Under this, a large number of girls participated in the sports trials on Saturday.

There was a lot of excitement among the girls who came to the trials for hockey, basketball and athletics.

On this occasion, SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur said, “All over the world, the girls are making great strides in various fields due to their talent. Gurus had given great status to women. While the Shiromani Committee conducts Khalsa games for schools and colleges every year, a separate academy for girls is now being set up so that the skilled girls can excel in the field of sports.”

Bibi Jagir Kaur said, “All facilities would be provided for the girls sports academy and sports training would be given by good coaches. The services of national and international wrestlers in various sports are being sought as advisors for the academy.”

During the trials on Saturday, Arjuna awardee for Basketball S. Sajjan Singh Cheema and national champion Bibi Harpreet Kaur Barnala served as selectors.

Similarly for hockey Bibi Rajbir Kaur former captain of Indian hockey team and Bibi Surjit Singh hockey olympian, and for athletics Bibi Kamaljit Kaur and Sh. Vikas (both senior coaches of Punjab Police) were given the responsibility for selection.

On this occasion among others executive committee member S. Ajmer Singh Khera, assistant secretary sports S. Tejinder Singh Padda, Mrs. Sumati Kanwar, Mrs. Poonam Arora, Bibi Parminder Kaur Pannu, S. Gurmeet Singh hockey advisor, S. Bhupinder Singh, S. Prem Singh, S. Surjit Singh, S. Parkash Singh (all hockey coaches), manager Resham Singh and S. Sarabjit Singh Dhunda were present.
