SGPC, SGRD University sponsors Cochlear Implantation of 12 Deaf and Mute Children

SGPC runs Sri Guru Ram Das University of Health Sciences providing the gift of hearing to 12 deaf and mute children by operating them under its Program “SOUND (Screening of Universal Neonatal Deafness)”.

S Surjit Singh Bhittewad, Vice President, Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee, Sri Amritsar, S Bhagwant Singh Siyalka, General Secretary, Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee, Sri Amritsar, S. Rajinder Singh Mehta, Member, Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee, Sri Amritsar and Member, SGRD Charitable Hospital Trust, Sri Amritsar personally visited all the operated upon Children in ward & encouraged them.

On this occasion S. Surjit Singh said though cochlear implant is a life changing surgery but cost of implant is an affordability issue for many people. He said these children are being operated upon free of cost with implant partially sponsored by SGPC & SGRD University.

He further said SGRD University started its Cochlear Implant Program three years back on the occasion of Prakash Purab of Guru Nanak Dev Ji by operating two children Manjapand, Jaisvi. Both of them are speaking fluently and at par with normal children of their age, which is the true outcome of cochlear implant.

He said these poor and needy children have been selected carefully from all over Punjab by the selection committee and are being operated upon by reputed Chief Operating Surgeon Dr. SP Dubey from Bhopal along with team of Surgeons of SGRD University included Dr. Arvinder Singh Sood, Prof. & Head, ENT, Dr. Vanita Sarin, Professor ENT, Dr. Bhanu Bhardwaj, Associate Professor ENT, Dr. Jaskaran Singh, Associate Professor, ENT, Dr. Pooja, Professor, Dr. Shubhdeep Kaur, Professor Anaesthesia.

Dr. Dubey has an experience of doing over 3000 implants. After this surgery these children will be able to hear and speak like normal children after proper training and therapy.

Dr. AP Singh said this university has successfully completed around 85 cochlear implantations. He said SGRD University has been regularly organizing screening camps in the region to create awareness regarding hearing loss in children and importance of early intervention.
