SGPC serious on Gurbani Kirtan with string instruments at Sri Harmandar Sahib

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has initiated the efforts following the directions from Sri Akal Takht Sahib to revive Gurbani Kirtan singing at Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib, as per ancient traditional style with string instruments.

In this regards, SGPC President Advocate S. Harjinder Singh has asked the Gurmat Sangeet Vidyalayas (Gurbani music institutions) and Missionary Colleges run under the Dharam Prachar Committee, SGPC, to make the practise with string instruments compulsory for the students undergoing Kirtan training.

Giving information, SGPC assistant secretary media S. Kulwinder Singh said that a Gurmata (resolution of consensus adopted in Sikh congregation) passed in the congregation of five Singhs held by Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib on May 3, 2022, was sent to the SGPC, in which, he has instructed to fully implement Gurbani Kirtan singing with string instruments at Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib within three years.

He said SGPC President S. Harjinder Singh has also appealed to raagis jathas (Gurbani singing groups) to start practise with string instruments and also asked to arrange teachers of string instruments in Gurmat Missionary Colleges and Gurmat Sangeet Vidyalayas while preparing new raagi jathas.

S. Kulwinder Singh said SGPC already has some raagi jathas who do Gurbani Kirtan with string instruments and their number will be expanded in future.

He said although the raagi jathas singing Gurbani Kirtan with string instruments are already serving at Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib, but SGPC President S. Harjinder Singh taking the directions of Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib seriously, asked to give priority to the implementation of string instruments during the Kirtan.
