SGPC provides Rs.10 lakh aid for Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar, Shillong

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) provided aid of Rs 10 lakh for the construction of Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar, Shillong.

A cheque for the said grant sanctioned during the last meeting of the SGPC’s executive committee chaired by SGPC President Bibi Jagir Kaur was handed over by SGPC general secretary advocate Bhagwant Singh Sialka to S. Gurjit Singh, president of the Gurdwara management committee at Shillong.

Speaking on the occasion Bhai Sialka said that at the request of Sikhs living in Shillong, assistance has already been provided for Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar and now Rs 10 lakh has been released again.

SGPC general secretary said that the SGPC is the central religious body of the Sikhs living in the country and the world and it stands by the Sikhs from time to time.

“When the Sikhs living in Shillong were attacked by the local Khasi people in 2018, the SGPC had taken the lead to ascertain their condition. We assure the Sikhs of Shillong that the Sikh body SGPC is with them and would continue to help as per requirement”, said Bhai Sialka.

Meanwhile, the president of the management committee at Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar Shillong S. Gurjit Singh thanked the SGPC for its full support to the Sikhs of Shillong.

“In June 2018, the SGPC had reached out to Shillong to stop the exodus of Sikhs. Even now the SGPC is continuing to provide support”, said Gurjit Singh.

Gurjit Singh said that Panthic personalities and office bearers of the SGPC would be invited to participate in a special function on completion of construction of building of Gurdwara Sahib.

Talking about the plight of Sikhs living in Shillong, Gurjit Singh said, “Although the Sikhs had to face difficulties from time to time, still the Sikhs are in Chardi Kala (high spirit) there. The children of Sikhs in Shillong are Saabat Soorat (having unshorn hair).”

On this occasion SGPC member S. Amarjit Singh Bhalaipur, additional secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhurakohna, assistant secretary Sulakhan Singh Bhangali and superintendent Malkit Singh Beharwal were present.
