Amritsar, February 21, 2021 (Yes Punjab News)
Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) observed the first centenary of massacre that took place 100 years ago to liberate Gurdwara Sri Nankana Sahib, the birth place of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, from evil mahants.

The main event in this regard was held on Sunday, in association with the sangat (congregation) at Godharpur village in Gurdaspur district of Shaheed Bhai Lachhman Singh Dharowali who led the group of Sikhs to Nankana Sahib at the time of massacre.

The bhog of Sri Akhand Path Sahib was held at Gurdwara Shaheed Bhai Lachhman Singh Dharowali before the commencement of the grand religious event organised to remember the martyrs.

A large number of people attended the main event at Godharpur on Sunday.

The event was also attended by 32 families of martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Nankana Sahib massacre, who were specially honoured by the SGPC.

Giani Jagtar Singh head granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib, Giani Harpreet Singh Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Raghbir Singh Jathedar of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, Bibi Jagir Kaur president SGPC, Sukhbir Singh Badal president Shiromani Akali Dal and representatives of several Nihang organizations, sampradas (branches) and Singh Sabha Societies also participated with enthusiasm.

On this occasion different speakers paid homage to the martyrs of Saka Nankana Sahib and urged the gathering to live their lives taking guidance from history.

Government of India’s attitude towards Sikhs full of estrangement – Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh

Giani Harpreet Singh, Jathedar Akal Takht Sahib strongly condemned the attitude of Government of India towards Sikhs which is full of estrangement and asked the government to change its mind towards the minorities.

Jathedar Akal Takht said, “The Government of India has once again reminded us of the pain of Saka Nankana Sahib which took place a hundred years ago. The attitude of the Central Government towards observing the centenary of Saka Nankana Sahib at the birth place of Guru Nanak is the same as that of the British.

The Government of India did not allow Jatha (group) to go to Pakistan due to full participation of Sikhs in the Kisan Andolan (farmers’ movement) but the government was under the illusion that Sikhs would withdraw support from the movement.”

In a stern tone, Giani Harpreet Singh said, “No matter how many Jathas are stopped by the Indian government, the Sikhs will stand firm with the farmers. The Government of India is following the same path as the British used to do a hundred years ago. This is not in the interest of the country and the government should realize that every citizen living in this country has equal rights.”

Jathedar Akal Takht said, “Going ahead to win the votes of the majority by suppressing the minorities is deleterious for the country. Sikhs cannot be oppressed by force, because Sikhs are inspired by their glorious history to fight for rights and truth.”

Giani Harpreet Singh said, “The qaumi (community) unity is needed for the hour and the Sikh community should forget differences and show qaumi unity.”

Jathedar thanked the SGPC for honoring the families of the martyrs.

Contribution of Sikhs in saving culture of country cannot be forgotten – Sukhbir Singh Badal

Capt Amarinder Singh’s silence on Centre’s stand on Jatha, raises questions, says Sukhbir Singh Badal

On the occasion of the centenary event of Saka Nankana Sahib, Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, while paying homage to the great martyrs of the massacre, slammed the Government of India for stopping the SGPC group from going to Nankana Sahib for attending the events related to historic moment.

Sukhbir Singh Badal said, “The Sikh community inherits the legacy of martyrdoms and the contribution of Sikhs in saving the culture of the country can not be forgotten. Service and martyrdom are two important pillars in Sikhism. Whenever there is a crisis in the country, the Sikhs come forward and fight. The decision of the Central government to stop the Sikh community from visiting Pakistan is unfortunate.”

Raising questions on the silence of Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh on this issue, Sukhbir Singh Badal said, “The silence of the Punjab chief minister on the arbitrary decision of the Centre raises big questions. The chief minister of Punjab should have spoken to the Centre but unfortunately he remained silent.”

Sukhbir Singh said that SGPC and Shiromani Akali Dal have always followed the great martyrs of the Sikh community as their role model and would continue to be guided by the sacrifices of the martyrs in future also.
