SGPC honours Sikh sportswoman Kamalpreet Kaur selected for Olympic Games

Kamalpreet Kaur, a Sikh athlete selected for the discus throw at the July 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, has been honored by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) with a sum of Rs 2 lakh and Siropao (robe of honour).

She was accorded this honor by SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur at the headquarters of SGPC here on Thursday.

Kamalpreet Kaur hails from Kabarwala village in Sri Muktsar Sahib district and is a graduate of Desh Bhagat College, Dhuri.

While honouring Kamalpreet Kaur, Bibi Jagir Kaur said that the SGPC has always been encouraging the Sikh youth to excel in various fields.

“Sikh sportswoman Kamalpreet Kaur has been honored for her achievements. The Sikh community is proud of the talented girls like Kamalpreet Kaur and the young generation should take inspiration from her”, said Bibi Jagir Kaur.

SGPC President said that SGPC would assist Kamalpreet Kaur for higher education.

“If she wants to study in a SGPC run college, her fees will not be charged. SGPC will also help her to study in other colleges as well”, said Bibi Jagir Kaur.

Bibi Jagir Kaur said that the SGPC was committed to provide better opportunities to the Sikh girls in the field of sports and under this a separate sports directorate for girls has been set up and an academy has been opened.

On the occasion, Kamalpreet Kaur, who has been selected for the Olympic Games, thanked the SGPC and appealed to the Sikh youth to come forward for the betterment of the quam through their hard work and with trust in Guru Sahib.

Meanwhile, SGPC also honored Kamalpreet Kaur’s coach Bibi Rakhi Tyagi with a cheque of Rs 21,000.

On this occasion, SGPC senior vice-president S. Surjit Singh Bhitewad, member Amrik Singh Vichhoa, S. Amarjit Singh Bhalaipur, former MLA Amarpal Singh Bonny Ajnala, assistant secretary S. Tejinder Singh Padda, manager of Sri Darbar Sahib S. Gurinder Singh Mathrewal, OSD Dr Amrik Singh Latifpur, Dr Sukhbir Singh, superintendent S. Malkit Singh Beharwal and family members of Kamalpreet Kaur, and S. Bhagwant Singh Midda Samiti member, former Sarpanch Swaran Singh, S. Nirmaljit Singh who came from Malout area were present.
