Sexual Harassment Allegations Against Haryana IPS Officer: Women Commission Seeks Transfer

Chandigarh, October 30, 2024 (Yes Punjab News)

Following allegations of sexual harassment against a Haryana IPS officer by several female police personnel, Haryana Women Commission Chairperson Renu Bhatia has requested Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to transfer the officer or place him on leave until the inquiry is complete. The allegations surfaced through a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, allegedly signed by seven female officers, which has since gone viral on social media.

Women Commission’s Intervention and Urgent Recommendations

On Tuesday, the IPS officer appeared before the Commission in person, presenting his version during a 30-minute session with Chairperson Bhatia. In her letter to the Chief Minister, Bhatia stressed the seriousness of the matter, noting that the issue has gained widespread media attention. “Considering the rapid spread of this issue on social media and news networks, the Commission requests that the IPS officer be either transferred, posted at headquarters, or sent on leave until the inquiry concludes to prevent any potential influence on the investigation,” wrote Bhatia.

Ongoing Investigation by Haryana Police

The Haryana Police initiated a fact-finding inquiry into the allegations on Sunday, led by Hisar Range Additional DGP M Ravi Kiran. The ADGP confirmed that the accused IPS officer himself requested a thorough investigation to address the claims. The investigation is currently being conducted by Fatehabad Superintendent of Police Astha Modi, a senior woman officer tasked with overseeing a fair and unbiased probe.

Progress in the Investigation: Statements and Additional Allegations

As part of her investigation, SP Astha Modi has been recording statements from female personnel posted in the district where the accused officer is stationed. Of the approximately 150 female personnel in the district, Modi has interviewed around 60 as she works to verify the claims. The initial complaint also mentions two female police personnel allegedly colluding with the IPS officer. Following the letter’s circulation, one of these officers filed an FIR against a social media platform administrator, accusing them of distorting facts related to the case.

Viral Letter Triggers Public Attention and Call for Action

The letter containing these allegations first appeared on social media on Friday, quickly gaining traction. The alleged harassment claims have prompted intense public interest, particularly due to the sensitive nature of the accusations and the involvement of senior law enforcement personnel. Given the potential implications, Bhatia and the Women Commission have recommended precautionary measures, including the temporary reassignment of the officer, to ensure an impartial investigation.

Case highlights handling of workplace harassment

The Haryana government’s response and swift action on this issue are being closely watched. With Renu Bhatia’s call for transferring the officer during the investigation and SP Astha Modi’s ongoing inquiry, the case highlights the importance of transparent processes in handling workplace harassment allegations within law enforcement. The next steps will be crucial in ensuring justice and maintaining public trust.
