Several people were injured in a shooting near the Seattle Center during the annual Bite of Seattle food festival, prompting a major emergency response and an ongoing police investigation.
Seattle Police confirmed the incident in a statement posted on X, saying officers were responding to reports of multiple shooting victims at the Seattle Center. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area while emergency personnel secured the scene and began their investigation.
The shooting triggered panic among festival-goers, with witnesses reporting scenes of chaos as people fled after hearing gunfire. According to local accounts cited in media reports, several attendees said they heard seven to eight gunshots before crowds began running in different directions.
Police have not yet disclosed the exact number of people injured or the severity of their wounds. Officials also have not confirmed whether any suspects have been taken into custody or released details regarding a possible motive.
Seattle Center, one of the city’s most prominent cultural and entertainment venues, was hosting the Bite of Seattle festival at the time of the incident. The annual event is among Seattle’s longest-running and most popular food festivals, attracting large crowds each year. The complex is also home to major attractions, including the Space Needle and Climate Pledge Arena.
Investigators remained at the scene late into the evening, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses as authorities worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The incident comes just over a week after another mass shooting in downtown Tucson, Arizona, on July 19, in which ten people, including the suspect, were injured. In that case, police officers responding to reports of gunfire shot the fleeing suspect after repeated commands, and authorities later confirmed that the suspect was in custody while multiple victims were treated for critical injuries.
Officials in Seattle said further information on Sunday’s shooting would be released as the investigation progresses.
