Sarkaria visits flood-hit areas to review rescue and relief operations

Punjab Water Resources Minister Mr. Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria on Thursday late evening visited Mau Sahib and Meowal villages in Jalandhar district to review the ongoing rescue and relief works.

Mr. Sarkaria had to ride pillon seat of a two-wheeler to reach on the Sutlej bank, where the work of plugging in breaches was being carried out.

While inspecting the site, the Minister expressed satisfaction over the relief works being done in this area. The Minister also visited Bholewal village near Phillaur to review the plugging work at another breach on the Dhussi bundh.

He directed officials that no stone should be left unturned to ensure the safety of life and properties of the people. Earlier, the Minister also visited Saroopwali and Gidderpindi villages with Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.

The Principal Secretary Water Resources Department Mr. Saravjit Singh said that the Department had given more financial powers to Executive Engineers and Superintendent Engineers to carry out emergency repair work on the Sutlej embankments and the officials concerned have been directed to commence work immediately on the banks of the Sutlej in Ludhiana and Jalandhar districts.

He revealed that the Superintendent Engineers have been authorised to make purchases and engage labour up to Rs 2 crore in order to deal with the situation in their respective area.
