Same forces that tried to polarise communities ahead of Assembly polls behind Sangrur desecration: Capt Amarinder

Chandigarh, May 12, 2019 (Yes Punjab News)

Warning of strict action against those responsible for last night’s desecration incident in district Sangrur, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Sunday said the divisive forces that had tried to polarize the state ahead of the Assembly elections were again rearing their heads and would face the consequences of their horrendous actions.

Directing the Punjab Police to immediately identify and arrest the culprits involved in the burning of Birh of Shri Guru Granth Sahib, along with Palki Sahib and Rumalla Sahib, in village Hathoa PS Amargarh, Captain Amarinder said the deliberate act of mischief was a part of the chain of similar events that had rocked the state in the run-up to the Assembly polls.

It was obvious that the same forces that had sought to destroy the state’s secular and peaceful fabric before the Assembly elections were trying, once again, to polarize the Sikh votes in their favour in their desperate bid to win the parliamentary polls, said the Chief Minister. The incident, coming just days before Punjab goes to polls, had obviously been perpetrated with an eye on the Sikh vote bank, but this strategy had failed in 2017 and would fail again, he warned.

The SIT probing the Bargari and Behbal Kalan cases had been tightening the noose against those responsible for the ghastly and dastardly act before the Akalis, supported by BJP, obstructed the process, he pointed out.

It was just a matter of a few days for the SIT to be back in action, with IG Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, to nail the guilty who had unleashed the wave of sacrilege cases back then, and were quite obviously trying to fan communal passions once again, with the same objective, he added.

Noting that his government had kept an iron control over such cases for the past 2 years, the Chief Minister said last night’s incident was a crude attempt by divisive forces to take law and order into their hands. He said he had directed the police to beef up security at and around all religious places in the state to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the coming days, ahead of the poll.

Those who think they can destroy Punjab’s peace with such shameful acts will be taught a lesson, he warned, adding that his government will not spare such hate mongers, nor will it allow them to disturb the peace and communal harmony of the state.
